NORTH CENTRAL GEOPOLITICAL ZONE DESERVES TO HAVE THE POSITION OF NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

APC was founded on 31 July 2013 when INEC issued it a certificate of registration giving its legal status to sponsor a candidate to any elective office provided under the Nigerian Constitution.

As a requirement to fulfill for registration, interim national officers were appointed to run the affairs of the Party pending the conduct of its national convention to elect its national officers.

One of the officers appointed was Alhaji Tijjani Tumsah, from Yobe State (North East), as National Secretary. He was in office will June 2014 when the APC held its maiden national convention to elect its national officers. At the national convention, Alhaji Mai Buni was elected national secretary. He was in office till 28 May 2019, after he was re-elected at the 2018 national convention.

Unfortunately, there was a crisis in the party national working committee in 2020 which led to the appointment of an interim national committee to run the affairs of the Party pending the holding of a national convention.

Accordingly, Alhaji Buni was again appointed Acting National Chairman. He has held fort since then.so if the office of the national secretary was zoned to North East in 2013 till 2018 was had been in North East then in next convention the position of national chairman cannot be zoned to North East.

It is instructive that North East has been the position of Acting National chairman for nearly two years. The 2015 and 2019 general elections result shows that the strongest APC zone is the northwest geopolitical zone. However, the northwest geopolitical is ruled out of the race for national chairman since the Party's president and leader are from there.

The North East is also ruled because, since 2013, the region has held the position of National Secretary, and between 2019 till now, it also holds the position of Acting National Chairman.

We are left with the North Central geopolitical zone of Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Niger, and the Plateau States. The APC is very strong in the North Central zone, as can be seen from the results and the pe4ormances of the Party in the  2015 and 2019 presidential results:

2015

Benue 373,961   /44.45%

Kogi   264,851    /62.86%

Kwara 302,146   /68.66%

Plateau 429,140  /55.95%

Niger 657,678    /80.83

Nassarawa 236.838   /46.30%

Total: 2,264,618

2019

Benue 347,668

Nassarawa 289,903

Niger 612,371

Kogi 285,894

Kwara 308,984

Total:2,027,481

In all fairness, in the light of the above analysis,  the position of National Chairman of APC in the forthcoming national convention should rightly go to North Central geopolitical.
