PRESIDENT TINUBU COMMITTED TO INFRASTRUCTURAL MAINTENANCE AND NEW TECHNOLOGY IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION.
*....VOWS TO END THE SUFFERINGS OF ROAD USERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THE HON. MINISTER OF WORKS, ENGR UMAHI SPEEDS UP THE NEW INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT POLICY UNDER THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WORKS*
It is no longer news that the President of Nigeria, *His Excellency, Sen. Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR* is taking bold, rare and futuristic steps to tackle the factors inhibiting socio- economic development in Nigeria. He is prioritizing ethical revolution, climate and environmental actions, security and humanitarian interventions, fiscal policy overhaul, job creation and food security as well as diplomatic engagements, and his road map in this regard will in the short term mitigate the excruciating pains of the accumulated developmental challenges and in the long run re-order the narrative of Nigeria and thus make her to be truly the giant of Africa.
Just within 48 hours of the arrival of Nigeria's delegation who went to China to attend the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) themed : *High Quality Belt and Road Cooperation: Together for Common Development and Prosperity* led by the Vice- President of Nigeria, *His Excellency, Sen. Kashim Shetima,* the Hon Minister of Works, *Sen Engr David Nweze Umahi* who was part of that all-important delegation immediately paid on- the-spot visit to some sections of the bridges in Lagos undergoing interventions and those that require urgent interventions by the Federal Ministry of Works He had a marathon visit and meeting with the Directors of the Ministry of Works in South West and Lagos between Friday and Saturday ( 27th & 28th October,2023). This zeal and passion for work by the Hon. Minister underscores the importance attached to road maintenance by the Renewed Hope administration of Mr President. The Hon. Minister in his visit observed that the bridges linking the Island from the Mainland needed urgent rehabilitation because of their age and traffic. He descried the activities of those using the under bridge to burn chemicals and other unwholesome activities but expressed hope that something drastic will be done to curtail the scourge and comprehensively improve the state of all the strategic bridges in Lagos, including 3rd Mainland bridge, Eko bridge, Marine bridge, Liverpool bridge etc
Currently a section of 3rd Mainland is receiving palliatives while trucks and lorries are diverted to Eko bridge for the time being.
So far the Federal Ministry of Works under Sen. Umahi has commenced road interventions in the interim across the country, through the provisions of road palliatives that will cushion the effect of the hardships occasioned by the years of neglect of some strategic Federal Highways and this interim intervention will be on short term basis pending the upcoming comprehensive road redesign and reconstruction by the Federal Ministry of Works.
The Minister in his speech during the visit also said "the Federal Ministry of Works is committed to upholding the integrity and esthetics of the bridges in Lagos and other strategic road infrastructure in Nigeria because of their important to the economy of the nation".He said that as part of the innovations on road construction and rehabilitation, "the Federal Ministry of Works is under obligation to guarantee minimal inconveniences to road users and this the Ministry must enforce on all contractors". He also noted that "Lagos State remains the commercial hub of the nation" and that "we have a lot of national infrastructure in Lagos that add value to the GDP of the nation and so cannot be neglected"
The new spirit of service to the people has been ignited in the work force of the Federal Ministry of Works and on the flanks of the contractors involved in road infrastructure. To them, there is no Weekend or night in the performance of their duties as that is part of their service to humanity. Files are now being treated within 24 hours. Bureaucracies have been reduced reasonably. Workers' welfare is being discussed. The workers are now at home with the new spirit of hard work, prudency and professionalism introduced by the Hon. Minister of Works.
