GOVERNOR UMAHI: THE PRIDE OF EBONYI WOMEN By Nwigwe, Queendaline Adanna State Women Leader, APC Ebonyi State

The patriarchal nature of our society (much regards for male gender) has overtime created a lacuna between the male and female genders, whereof the latter (females) are being discriminated and thus pushed into the cesspool of inferiority complex. The unequal treatments so far meted out to the feminine gender can never be overemphasized. In other words, inequalities in power, decision-making, empowerment, development and many areas against women abound.

Corroborating the 1945 United Nations Charter and 1995 Beijing Declaration for women against inequalities in power and decision-making, the National Gender Policy (NGP) was formulated in 2006 in Nigeria to promote a 35% Afirmative Action (AA) for women. It's a policy that demands 35% involvement of women in all governance processes and its related matters. But many holders of power in our country as well as many state governors have not paid strict adherence to the above policy.

In Ebonyi, the state governor, His Excellency, Engr. Chief (Dr) Apostle David Nweze Umahi, FNSE, FNATE has distinguished himself. Unarguably, Umahi is a gender sensitive leader who has not only fulfilled the 35% Affirmative Action for women but has surpassed it. The degree of involvement of women in governance, decision-making and human capital development under the leadership of Governor Umahi is unprecedented in the history of Ebonyi state.

Apostle Umahi has given Ebonyi women the opportunity to participate actively and serve in different leadership positions in the state. Under Umahi, every senatorial zone has not less than one female Council Chairman. And out of the 13 local government areas in the state, we have 4 female Council Chairmen for Ezza North, Ebonyi, Ohaozara and Afikpo North LGAs. A reasonable number of women are Development Centre (DC) Coordinators, ward Councillors, Commissioners, Special Assistants, etc. A female, Hon Princess Nkechinyere Iyioku of Ohaozara is the chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Ebonyi state chapter. A female, Mrs Beatrice Eze of Izzi DC is also the chairman of the Forum of DC Coordinators in the state. Every local government in the state has female vice-chairman compulsorily. A reasonable number of widows receive monthly salaries from the government to alleviate their condition. A lot of women received grants to start off business of their choice, while women empowerment has been on top gear.

Governor Umahi has really delivered Ebonyi women from the dungeon of poverty, inferiority complex and discrimination and placed them on high economic cum socio-political status. He has won the hearts of Ebonyi women and thus written his name in gold.

Indeed, Ebonyi is so lucky to have a leader like Umahi who has the interest of all at heart. He has touched all areas in governance and this has made his administration the best in the political history of Ebonyi.

We, Ebonyi women are proud of our governor.

APC, Umahi is the answer!
