The legislature is a government institution which represents the common and collective interests of the citizens through the enactment of laws and the exercise of oversight functions on the activities of the executive arm of government. The legislative arm in a solid democracy act as an independent institution which promotes democracy and ultimately strengthens political participation.
The Legislature is not duty bound by law to veer into executive functions.
It will be my duty when elected to identify the needs of my constituents and recommend same to the executive during budgeting. It should be note worthy that legislators have no direct control over implementation of projects. All awards, financing and supervising of constituency projects are the exclusive preserve of executive agencies other than the National Assembly.
The central district of Cross River state is rich in natural resources.
Research have proven that 40% of solid mineral deposits in the state are found in the central. This minerals includes manganese, barite ore, quartz, felspar, lead ore, amethyst, pyrite, rock salt, talc, coal, garnet, and iron ore.
When these natural resources are sustainably tapped, they can create our local economic growth and job opportunities for our young population.
If elected into the senate in 2023, I will influence government policy that will focus on partnering with the private sector to tap into this mineral for the benefit of my constituents.
I have also identified a lack of electrical energy as impediment to the Central district's economic growth.
Agbokim waterfall has a hydro-electric power capacity potential of 435 MW. Therefore, I will engage the federal government to partner with the private sector to develop a Hydroelectricity power plant in the vicinity to service the electric power needs of the senatorial district and the state at large.
Surely, having adequate power supply will trigger business opportunities and job creation for our teeming youthful population.
River 'Cross River' from the Nigerian/Cameroun border to the Atlantic Ocean and its distributaries is an important national and international waterway. Two hundred years ago, the river was the means of transportation and point of contact and trade between the lower and upper Cross River Regions. Undoubtedly resuscitating the river 'Cross River' as a means of transportation will help revitalize economic activities in the communities lying alongside the River's banks from Etung, Ikom, Yakurr, Abi, Biase, Odukpani, Akampa right to Calabar and Akwa Ibom. It will also undisputably promote trade, commerce, social interaction, and tourism.
Another area of my legislative agenda will be engaging with relevant federal government agencies such as the National Inland Water Authority(NIAWA) and the private sector to use the Cross River waterway as a means of transportation to promote commerce, social intercourse relationship, tourism, and business opportunities.
