Why APC Needs To Favour North-Central Zone For Chairmanship

The national caretaker committee has unveiled some plans of the party for the national convention. The APC caretaker committee under Mai Mala Buni gave some clues that north-central may be favoured. Certainly, there are reasons that should make the party to consider or favour north-central region.

The party needs to elect a new chairman so as to officially take over from Adams Oshiomhole. The party relies on the caretaker committee to carry out its day to day activities. Then, the committee is looking at the direction of the north central zone.

The most convincing reason is to analyse how the leadership of the APC distributed key offices that are available through the party. Obviously, the north-central region is lagging far behind.

The northwest is the luckiest. It took the presidency. And it should not expect another seat from the party right now. The incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, is from Katsina State. Therefore, there won't be any need to take the national chairman from the northwest.

Likewise, the northeastern region has benefitted a lot even though the APC isn't the most popular party there. Out of six states, the APC controls only Gombe, Yobe and Borno. And right now, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, and the caretaker committee chairman Mai Mala Buni are from northeast. Hence, it will be wrong to pick the national chairman from there.

In the southern region, the southwest is also favoured. It produced the vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; and the House of Representatives speaker, Femi Gbajamiabila. What else would the southwest want?

And despite the fact that the APC is grossly underrepresented in the south-south, the deputy senate president is from the zone. Mr. Ovie Omo-Agege is one of the few senators (from south-south) elected on the APC platform.

The northern subregion can even be called the big stronghold of the All Progressives Congress. Interestingly, Mr. Tanko Al-Makura said that he would want to lead the party. He is from Nassarawa State. If the APC finally considers the analysis above, it may be the turn of the middle belt to produce the next national chairman.
